Initially, Spain may not conjure up an image of impressive snow covered mountain peaks catering for one of the world's most exclusive winter sports.

However, as Europe’s second most mountainous country (after Switzerland), it is perhaps less surprising that Spain is host to numerous ski resorts dotted throughout the country.

Enjoy the sun and the snow in Andalucia's best kept secret: the modern ski resort of Sierra Nevada. With 100 kms of slopes for all levels Sierra Nevada enjoys one of the longest ski seasons in Europe.

Sierra Nevada is only 1 1/2 hour drive away from Iznájar. There are plenty of ski & snowboard hire shops available in the ski village of Pradollano with no pre-booking required: just bring your thermals and ski coats and away you go.

During the summer months the slopes are open for horse riding and mountain biking with bike hire shops available.

Sierra Nevada defies many concepts associated with skiing. Located barely a stone's throw from the Mediterranean coast, it has practically guaranteed sunshine, the best Spring snow conditions in Europe, and is still reasonably priced compared to many of its European counterparts.

As one of Europe's highest resorts it is (perhaps surprisingly) very snowsure and typically has a long season. Traditionally the season starts around the end of November running through to the end of April or even into the first week of May. The longest season on record was the winter of 2008/9 which ran from the 15th November 2008 until the 17th May 2009.

Sierra Nevada literally means "Snowy Mountain Range", and it includes some of the highest peaks in Europe, not to mention the highest concentration of peaks over 3,000m in the country. The Mulhacen at 3,482m is the Iberian Peninsula's highest.

The ski terrain is majestically overlooked by the jagged glacier-formed Veleta peak, at 3,398m, Spain's third highest after Aneto (3,404m) in the Pyrenees.

Sierra Nevada has a wide range of places to rent equipment for skiing or snowboarding, the most modern and complete ranges, to pick it up at the slopes and forget the hassle of transporting it from home.

it's never too late to learn. Even if you're a first time skiier, you can still ski Sierra Nevada! The resort has the best qualified instructors in skiing and snowboarding. They will guide you through your first steps with confidence

Courses are well organized and if you want you can take up private lessons to advance more quickly.

Sierra Nevada has plenty of runs for beginners so there's no excuse not to take the plunge.
