PHOTOGRAPHY IN ANDALUCIA

The region of Andalucia is the ideal holiday destination for photographers whether amateur or professional.   The quality of the light throughout the region, due to the low levels of light and air pollution, particularly inland, is unrivalled in Europe and helps produce stunning photographs.

Andalucia is a vast region, rich in traditions and contrasts, but ask a foreigner to tell you about Andalucia, and they will invariably think of beaches, flamenco, orange trees and white villages. Yes, that's one part of Andalucia but there is so much more to explore as a photographer!

There's a rich gastronomic culture in Andalucia, everything from the Paella, to the nations Chocolate and churro breakfast, tapas, and oranges! Andalucia is like several countries all rolled into one region, which makes it both challenging and exiting to a photographer.

Portrait photography

The Spanish people are extremely hospitable. One of the endearing ingredients of the Spanish people is their ability to embrace the whole family in their activities, none should be left out. A warm welcome awaits children, the elderly, the tourist and the visitor. Generally speaking, if the spanish people can collaborate with you, they will.

Typically, the environmental portraits you can expect to achieve in Andalucia, are shepherds, dancers dancing, bullfighters, a musician with his or her instrument, a potter at work, an old lady resting on her doorstep, olive farmers hard at work harvesting.

What to expect

There are many wonderful subjects to photograph in Andalucia, the Spanish traditions such as bull-fighting and flamenco, the colourful costumes and processions at the fiestas, the snowy mountains or sandy beaches, the quaint white-washed villages, wide spectrum of birds and wildlife, the ever-changing seasons that bring with them the very noticeable changes in floral and plant life.

The light in Spain

The light in Spain can be very intense, which means that photographers can use a slower film and obtain not only great saturation, but a superbly fine grain. Fuji Velvia is a good film, it gives beautiful warm tones capturing that scrumptious late afternoon and evening sun. Nowadays, most photography is digital, the same rules apply to digital photography a lower ISO gives a better quality, crisper image.

Model Released Images

Editorial images of festivals in Spain and general street life, if published in an editorial context, have no need for a model release. However if published in an advertising context, then yes, a model release is required.

Ten years ago you could photograph more or less anybody and anything, now, like the rest of Europe, people have woken up to Model and property release issues.
